DLab application open (Kopie 1)

0 The DLab program offers ambitious students the chance to gain interdisciplinary skills and prepare themselves to succeed in an ever-changing digital environment. Since January 2022, the DLab offers students to develop themselves beyond their main degrees and to work in interdisciplinary teams on future challenges. During the past semester, students analyzed the future trends of three industries (logistics, water supply, and IoT security) in cooperation with industry experts from DB Schenker, Wilo, and Physec. Further, they participated in company workshops with McKinsey & Company (circular economy) and Vonovia (sustainable housing) and worked on mini challenges to improve the studying experience at TU Dortmund. Additionally, students participated in classes outside of their own faculty and gained insights beyond their main course of study. After successfully participating in the DLab for three semesters, students receive the Certificate in Digital Technology Management. If you are interested in developing yourself further, apply now for one of the last spots of the winter 2022 DLab cohort. New Publication on the Digital Orientation of Firms (Kopie 1)

0 Digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, or cloud computing are of strategic importance for the value creation of companies. However, research has so far provided little insight into how a firm?s strategic orientation towards such technologies can be explained and measured. The study now published in the European Management Journal integrates recent digitalization themes with IT business alignment research and presents the novel concept of a firm's "digital orientation". Based on 6,498 letters-to-shareholders from US companies over a period of 16 years, a research project conducted by Prof. Dr. Steffen Strese and Dr. Bastian Kindermann (both TU Dortmund University) together with researchers from RWTH Aachen University and WWU Münster developed a new measurement instrument. This new measurement instrument enables researchers to examine firms' digital orientation as a strategic orientation towards digital technologies, digital capabilities, digital ecosystems, and the digital architecture of the organization on a large-scale basis and over long periods of time using computer-aided text analysis (CATA). In addition, the study empirically shows that digitally oriented companies can achieve higher firm performance than companies with a less pronounced digital orientation. It thus offers important opportunities for further empirical research on the digital transformation and innovation of companies. …

Presentation of the 1st Humboldtⁿ Award for Sustainability

0 The HumboldtN Award for Sustainability was presented on December 4, 2023. The patron is the Wuppertal entrepreneur Dr. Jörg Mittelsten Scheid. Three promising best-practice projects were honored. Of the eight nominations from universities in North Rhine-Westphalia and the Wuppertal Institute, the winner in the category Teaching : is the digital lecture series "Digital Medicine goes Planetary Health", led by research associate Julia Nitsche at Witten/Herdecke University, Real-world laboratories : is the project "Liveable streets, places and neighborhoods, LesSON for short", led by Dr. Steven März at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, and in the technology transfer category: is the "Holzbau-GIS" project, led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Annette Hafner at the Ruhr University Bochum. The following projects were also nominated: „ Circular Cities : Practice-oriented certificate program for waste prevention managers in municipalities" by Alix Weigel M.A., Dr. Andrea Petmecky and Prof. Dr. Annette Elisabeth Töller of the FernUniversität in Hagen „ studium oecologicum “ by Prof. Dr. Claudia Gärtner, Dr. Georg Hubmann, Kirsten Lindner-Schwentick, Prof. Dr. Stephan Lütz and Dr. Henning Moldenhauer from TU Dortmund University „ Thermal pre-treatment as a basis for the recovery of lithium from lithium-ion batteries “ by Christin Stallmeister from RWTH Aachen University „Digital platform for the production-related design of sustainable lightweight composite materials based on wood fibers ( DiPl-HFC )“ by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Am 4. Dezember 2023 wurde der HumboldtN-Preis für Nachhaltigkeit verliehen. Die Schirmherrschaft liegt beim Wuppertaler Unternehmer Dr. Jörg Mittelsten Scheid. Ausgezeichnet wurden drei vielversprechende Best-Practice Projekte. Aus den acht Nominierungen der Universitäten in Nordrhein-Westfalen und des Wuppertal Instituts haben in der Kategorie Lehre : die digitale Ringvorlesung „Digital Medicine goes Planetary Health“, geleitet von der Wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiterin Julia Nitsche an der Universität Witten/Herdecke, Reallabore : das Projekt „Lebenswerte Straßen, Orte und Nachbarschaften, kurz LesSON“, geleitet von Dr. Steven März am Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie, und in der Kategorie Technologietransfer : das Projekt „Holzbau-GIS“, geleitet von Prof. Dr.-Ing. Annette Hafner an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum gewonnen.
